Hello there.[edit source]

May I ask what a "steward" is? I take it that it's a founder of a wiki, correct? --Cpl. Dunn 01:18, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Steward is a group given to the wiki's founder after a new wiki has been created. Members of the group can grant and revoke bot, bureaucrat, sysop and rollback rights through Special:UserRights. Help:Group rights has some info on user groups and their rights. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:09, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't understand Chinese. Could you please write in English? Thank you.
Chinese translation, courtesy of Google Translate: 对不起,我不懂中文。能否请你用英文写?谢谢。--Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:03, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Are you referring to the variant conversion feature, a core MediaWiki feature, which (I believe) is used on the Chinese Wikipedia? The reason why I'm asking is because I'm not seeing anything called "Extended label syntax" on the Special:Version page of zh.idiom.wikia.com, so I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to enable on your wiki. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:47, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Invitations[edit source]

Greetings,

I recently established a private wiki on ShoutWiki. However, I could not access [[Special:Invite]] to invite users, which I was led to believe should be enabled by a blog post from July. A search at bugzilla indicated that it's not being enabled by default on private wikis when it should be, and user rights management denies me permission to manually set a user's group to "invited".

Would it be possible for you (as a staff member) to enable [[Special:Invite]] on the Neukolumbia Wiki?

Thanks for your time and support! vonPreußentalk

Hi Michael, I've enabled Special:Invite for Neukolumbia Wiki now. Happy editing! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:47, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again! vonPreußentalk
Hmm, I'm actually still getting an error on that page. I tried refreshing the special pages to no avail (though I suppose it may not attempt to refresh it if it doesn't think it exists). Should I be expecting a delay, or has something gone wrong? vonPreußentalk
Hi again Michael, I actually forgot to save the changes! Once I did save them, I noticed a rather nasty bug with Special:Invite, so I had to disable the extension. Sorry about that. I'm hoping that Skizzerz can fix the bugs soon and we can get Special:Invite enabled for all private wikis. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:23, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see. No problem, and thanks again for your assistance. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. vonPreußentalk

Extensions[edit source]

Sorry to bother you again,

I was wondering whether ShoutWiki would entertain the possibility of installing extensions on specific wikis that are not enabled globally. Specifically, I'm interested in the OggHandler extension, or some equivalent which would allow for embedding and inline playing of ogg vorbis files, since such capability does not appear to be presently available.

Thanks again, vonPreußentalk

Hi Michael, please don't be sorry; it's what we are here for. :-) I'll ask our tech team about enabling OggHandler on your wiki. It's used on Wikimedia sites such as Wikimedia Commons, so it should be pretty stable. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:24, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again! vonPreußentalk

Extension.[edit source]

Hi Jack, long time no seeing you. Hey I was wondering where I could see where is a complete list of what extensions ShoutWiki has available including the ones that one has to request to be enable. --Cizagna (talk) 15:51, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

  • Hey Cizagna. I just happened to be replying to this same questions elsewhere, so I hope you don't mind me jumping in ;) You can find the list of extensions available on ShoutWiki, and other extension-related info, at Help:Extensions. Derfel ShoutWiki Staff (talk) 16:28, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Awesome thanks =) --Cizagna (talk) 16:47, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Hi Cizagna, good to see you too! :-) In addition to Help:Extensions, you might want to check the individual wiki's Special:Version to see what extensions are enabled on a specified wiki. Special:Version is sometimes more useful as it's automatically kept up-to-date, while we may sometimes forget to update Help:Extensions (I'll try to remember it though ;-). --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:45, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah did that but sometimes Special:Version can be confusing and I had more interest in the ones I have to request. --Cizagna (talk) 18:17, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Vector[edit source]

Hello. I just want to know when you will enable Vector. Thanks. TheHomer (talk) 20:35, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Vector skin will be enabled once we have upgraded the site to MediaWiki 1.16. Our current plan is to release 1.16 on November 1 if all goes well. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:45, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Now you've gotten me curious: will Monobook still be available to use as a default skin for wikis, available only for user default, or disabled completely after the upgrade? vonPreußentalk

Two things. One is related to vector, one isn't.
1. PLEASE let us keep monobook as a default skin.
2. Could you add the namespace "Tutorial" to my wiki? Spark01 (talk)

Easy there, Monobook isn't going anywhere. Notice the options on Special:Preferences, under the "skin" tab? They're there to stay.
Spark01, I've added the "Tutorial" namespace (and its talkspace) to Spriting Wiki; the numerical ID for the namespace is 330 (331 for the talkspace). --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 21:16, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks.

And I'm not worried about not having it as a preference, but if possible I'd like to keep it so all users see my wiki as monobook. Spark01 (talk)

Of course that is and will be always possible! We understand that Monobook is to many users the "one true wiki style", and thus we have no plans to remove it, so no need to worry about it. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:00, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
Great to hear! :D vonPreußentalk

Moving from Wikia[edit source]

Hi Jack I'm looking for a new home for a Wiki that is currently on Wikia. This wiki hosting service has been mentioned a few times by other wikis as a new host for them if they move. I looked at the list of wikis here and have not found many of any size yet - can you point me to some of the bigger ones, so i can have a look at them ?

My main reasons for looking to moving are the constant changes by wikia that are moving away from encyclopaedic based wikis and the no option imposition of the 'Oasis/Wikia' skin. Is a version of Monaco (a wikia skin) available or is it just the std media wiki monobook. Compatability with wikipedia pages rules out some wiki farms as there are too many differences in the Wiki markup with other wiki languages from the mediawiki version. The wikia curently has 4000 + pages and was looking to grow to 5000 this year till wikia cause a slowing of development with the changes. If i move i dont want to just clone the old one, as a revamp was due anyway as scope of content had widened. What can "ShoutWiki" offer me that is different from wikia and can you offer any advice/help in restructuring the wiki to make it more attractive to new editors ? - (A Very Disgruntled wikia editor)

Jedipedia, the Finnish-language Star Wars wiki, is a relatively big wiki — one of our biggest wikis, if I recall correctly. :-)
Monaco, along with some other skins and other cool features, will be available as a premium feature later this year. Premium features are optional features that become available once the founder of a wiki makes a small payment to ShoutWiki. We believe that premium features are a nice way to support the site financially without upsetting anyone. Monobook is available for all wikis on the wiki creation tool.
ShoutWiki is all about you and your wiki; the main focus is on the wiki and its contents. We offer support through various channels of communication; wiki talk pages, e-mail and of course, real-time support through our IRC channel. In addition to all this, we place no restriction on the customization of the site (ads being the only exception; you're not allowed to remove them with CSS or JS). You can read more about ShoutWiki features or browse our existing wikis to see for yourself.
Our Customer Support Team would be more than happy to help you restructure your wiki and make it even better! Feel free to contact the team anytime you need help. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:19, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Database Dumps[edit source]

Hi Jack,

Is there any way for me to download a database dump of a wiki, or otherwise create a backup of such, to my computer? vonPreußentalk

And while I'm at it, I got the same error as is present in the screenshot above when posting that message, in case it's of any assistance to point it out. Cheers, vonPreußentalk
Currently the only way to download a database dump of a wiki is through Special:Export. This isn't certainly the best solution, and we've got some plans on how to make full XML dumps available — we just haven't had the time to work on those due to many different factors (site stability, user requests, and of course our off-wiki lives). While I'm unable to give you a definite timeframe, I hope we'll have some sort of a dump generation mechanism ready by summer 2011. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:19, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
Alright, thanks again. vonPreußentalk

New wiki stuff[edit source]

Hey, I'm just wondering, does it in any way violate any terms of agreement or something (something that might damage me or the contributors) to make a wiki with the sole purpose of documenting certain actions (say, mistreatment of users etc by staff on another wiki farm). Or do I need that wiki farm's agreement or something? Their search function is down currently, so I can't find what licence they release their content under though. Thanks you! --El Nazgir (talk) 21:20, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

As long as you don't violate anybody's copyrights, it should be OK. Remember to check their license and attribute everything properly to their respective authors. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 22:30, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
After google searching (because their search function is still down) I found their terms of agreement and found out that they operate under the "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA)", and that only their name is trademarked. So if I avoid using their name (and make sure nobody else does), but link everyone to their actions, it should be fine. Thank you very much! --El Nazgir (talk) 06:37, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
BTW, I got this error when submitting this post, but it got through nonetheless:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: INSERT INTO `shared_newtalk` (sn_wiki,sn_user) VALUES ('5','1') from within function "SharedNewtalk::addNewtalk". MySQL returned error "1062: Duplicate entry '1-5' for key 'PRIMARY' (localhost)".

--El Nazgir (talk) 21:22, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
Yep, this has been reported a few times before and has been filed as bug #37 on our Bugzilla. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 22:30, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
Ah, ok. I was a bit hasty to report that, and didn't see it was the same as a few headers up, sorry :S --El Nazgir (talk) 06:37, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
No worries, it's better to have it reported multiple times than not reported at all. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:45, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Question[edit source]

Hi Jack Phoenix, is there a group of anti-vandals that are given extra flags across the ShoutWiki wikis? Like the Spam Task Force on Wikia? Or is it basically just the ShoutWiki staff members? --giggle (talk) 02:19, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Not Jack Not currently. {{SUBST:User:Ajraddatz/sig}} (talk) 02:28, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Ajraddatz is right, there's no such group. Currently ShoutWiki staff members handle the tasks which require additional rights; obviously any editor is welcome to revert vandalism, spam and other malicious edits if they see such edits somewhere. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:45, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Invited Users and Imported Contributions[edit source]

Hello again,

I have a couple of hopefully simple issues which I'm hoping you'll be able to assist me with.

First, as the Special:Invite extension is disabled, could you kindly add JakiCold, Tsar Nasrallah I, and 林眞 to the invited users group on Neukolumbia Wiki please?

Secondly, there was some trouble when the first two of those accounts were registered, and I think I know the reason, though I'm not sure how simple it would be to fix. The wiki in question was moved over from Wikia, but user accounts, etc., were not ported with it (as it had a small number of pages, I opted to just port them all individually using Special:Export). Several of the exported edits were by users with these names on the old wiki (as you can see here, here, here, and here), which now show up under those names but with a link to Special:Contributions, as if it was an anonymous edit.

When one of the users in question first attempted to register (on the Neukolumbia Wiki), he received an error saying the account was already in use, but could not log into it. I found that creating accounts on the ShoutWiki Hub solved this issue; however, the edits in question seen on the above-linked history pages still link to the contributions page. Is there a simple way to synchronize these with the newly-created accounts? If there isn't, it's not a big deal, so long as it won't impede their ability to edit further, but I figured I'd ask anyway, and point out the possible bug with account creation.

Thanks again for your continued help and support, it's greatly appreciated. vonPreußentalk

Hi Michael, I've added the three users you requested to the invited users group. I'll see if we can get bug #36 fixed soon-ish; I'm not sure exactly what caused the errors I saw when testing it.
The reason why one of the users you mentioned was not able to register is related to MediaWikiAuth extension, which is usually enabled for imported wikis (such as Jedipedia). Warning, this may get a bit too technical...
MediaWikiAuth requires patching MediaWiki core file, SpecialUserlogin.php (which provides the Special:UserLogin page). The added code bits and pieces check a user's contributions against MediaWiki's revision table. If there are entries on the revision table with the user's name, MediaWiki won't allow the account to be created on the wiki. For example: user:Foo has edited an imported wiki, he has 10 edits, and MediaWikiAuth extension is not enabled there. He tries to create an account, but it fails because MediaWiki knows that he has made 10 edits in the past and thus the account is "reserved" to the original account holder. It's a smart idea, very useful to prevent imposters — but I don't think that the original author of the extension thought of wiki farms when he was writing it. :-) I'll see if it's possible to skip that check on wikis where the MediaWikiAuth extension is not active. Technical babble ends here, hopefully.
I'm not sure if it's possible to synchronize the edits with the new accounts without editing the database directly. I'm guessing that because the accounts didn't exist at the time when you imported the contents, the edits were treated as if they had been made by anonymous users; they were given the user ID of 0, which is also what anonymous users have. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 09:42, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense; though I agree, with the advent of wiki farms, it does seem like a less-than-appropriate way to determine account reservations. Thanks for changing those group rights! :) vonPreußentalk
No problem. Did I already mention how cool your wiki looks? :-) I really like the theme, it's well-designed.
Also, I hope that you don't mind me editing s:w:neukolumbia:MediaWiki:Common.js; I fixed one IE bug and stylized the code for better readability. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 10:26, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliment and the fix! My web design since moving to Ubuntu has had the great failing when it comes to noticing and fixing IE bugs, so I do greatly appreciate it! vonPreußentalk
