Hub admin[edit source]

Hi Jack. If there's ever a need for another hub admin, I'd be more than happy to do it. --Hockeyben (talk) 18:53, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

That's great to know! I'm sure we could use a new Hub admin or few in the near future... --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:56, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Issues on Eureka wikis and a small one on fr.24[edit source]

Hi Jack,
I have SQL issues on both Eureka wikis. Here are the messages I have (apparently the sames):

English Eureka wiki bug.jpg French Eureka wiki bug.jpg

Also There is still "0" article on s:w:fr.24 but I wrote some (at least 10 and many of them on the main namespace). Thank you for your answer. Best Regards. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 16:30, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Fixed, fixed and fixed. Let me know if you stumble upon similar/the same issue(s) in the future. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:56, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much Jack. Just one more question: What about the English Stargate Wiki? --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
If you want it restored, I can add it to our queue of wikis to import. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:59, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it doesn't matter really as there was no one after Escyos who cared about it but me, but since your unfortunate crash, I created a new one with the French on Wikkii.net from scratch (installation of MediaWiki on a domain and all other stuff, good exercise for me by the way). So both wikis are growing up slowly but surely. So I leave it to you and the staff to decide if it has to be restored or not. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 20:09, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I guess we'll reimport it, then; maybe someone will stumble upon it one day and will want to take good care of it. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:54, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Nevertheless, if you reimport it, I will take care as no one vandalizes it even if I will not contribute anymore on it until someone does ;-) --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 13:14, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Wiki directory[edit source]

On the wiki directory, there are a lot of wikis that are broken. It could be frustrating for users trying to find wikis they are interested in if half the links lead to a wiki that's currently not working. Maybe there should be a new category for wikis that aren't serviceable at the moment, so the broken wikis can be distinguished from the working ones.--Hockeyben (talk) 23:42, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

You're right. The problem here is that all of those wikis that are currently broken existed at some point. Some have moved their wikis to a different host (such as LIMAFOX76 and his Stargate wikis; see above), whereas some want their wiki reimported to ShoutWiki. Once we'll know for sure which wikis are coming back and which aren't, then we can delete the appropriate description pages on ShoutWiki Hub and free the subdomains so that they can be used again in the future. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:54, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

AWA Wikisite[edit source]

Hi Jack,

I've noticed that the anti-wikia-alliance wiki is having technical difficulties, is there a reason for this or has the site moved to a new server? The website isn't showing on my browser. Darkstar (talk) 17:33, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi, the wiki hasn't been reimported here yet. Wikis will be reimported by request only as we don't want lots of inactive wikis. Although, to the best of my knowledge, the AWA wiki has moved to another host. However, if you want the AWA wiki reimported to ShoutWiki, just say and we can do so for you at some point. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 17:39, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and if you want to reimport the wiki, see this blog post. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 17:42, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
AWA is all but dead. I don't think there's any need for it to be reimported.--Hockeyben (talk) 19:10, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. Also, please, grant createaccount right just for administrators and writeapi just to users (delete it from anonymous) in s:w:tw. And why UserGroupRights has rights from AbuseFilter extension? Username (talk) 05:00, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Done. As for AbuseFilter rights, that's because they somebody added them to our GlobalSettings.php ages ago and because GlobalSettings.php is loaded for every wiki, the rights entries are there for every wiki too, no matter if AbuseFilter is enabled or not. I probably should look into that... --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:50, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Hubs[edit source]

Hi Jack. What happened to the Chinese, Dutch, and Polish hubs? They don't seem to work. Also, are there any plans for a German hub? The German Wikipedia is the second largest Wikipedia, so it might be a good idea to create one... --Hockeyben (talk) 18:24, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

They're on our list of wikis to reimport; Lcawte's been working on imports today.
As for Hubs, they are created as (native) spekers of the language appear. Ich kann nicht sprechen Deutsch and to my knowledge, we don't have any fluent speakers of German in our staff either, so we're waiting for someone else to create it. I recall we had a German Starter wiki at some point, though, so that'll be reimported in the near future, along with the Hubs you mentioned. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:36, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Wiki reimports[edit source]

It appears you've founded at least two wikis, related to Tintin and Inheritance. In case that you forget, I suggest you remember to import them if you want to. —Will k (talk) 05:13, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your attention, Will, but I keep a very up-to-date list of the wikis I'm actively involved with. :-) Tintin and Inheritance wikis weren't exactly "created" by me; true, I created the databases via CreateWiki but that's it. The reason why I did that was because those two wikis moved from ShoutWiki to another host. While I think the subjects are very fascinating, I'm not an expert on those, sadly, and therefore I can't really contribute much to the wikis in question.
If memory serves me correct, Inheritance wiki is SnakeQ's project. I can't remember who was involved with the Tintin wiki, however; maybe LRP;840 knows/remembers better than I. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:24, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Ah, so I thought. OK then. —Will k (talk) 04:23, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Updating links about Privacy policy and Terms of use on the French Hub[edit source]

Hi Jack,
Is it possible please to update the "Politique de confidentialité" (Privacy policy) and "Conditions d'utilisation" (Terms of use) links on the French hub bottom pages with the following links respectively

I wrote in those policies that the English version prevails but I think it's better for French-speaking people to see a French version when you hit the link. Thank you very much. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 07:55, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi LIMAFOX76, I've created s:w:mwmsg:MediaWiki:Disclaimerpage/fr and s:w:mwmsg:MediaWiki:Privacypage/fr on our Interface Messages Wiki (the wiki controlling default translations); now all the ToU/PP links on page footers on French wikis should link to the French version of the ToU and PP.
If you want administrator rights on the Interface Messages Wiki to do translation work and other associated maintenance tasks, such as updating links and whatnot, I'd be more than happy to give you them. :-) Again, thank you for your hard work on building the French-language ShoutWiki community, it's greatly appreciated! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome. I was sad to see all the three SW outages, but I'm glad to see you're back and well back. I know you will loose the French Stargate Wiki, but I chose this way as I can control almost everything (with the exception of PHP and mySQL) and it's a good way to progress in MediaWiki stuff. Nevertheless, I still support SW. I'll be glad to contribute on the Interface Message Wiki, but you'll have to help me on what to do (I suppose we have to add /fr on the Default Message text in the MediaWiki namespace to see a French translation on French designed wikis). --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 19:46, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
It is, of course, very saddening to see wikis move from ShoutWiki, but should these wikis ever decide to come back, we're more than happy to host them!
It's also great to hear that you're interested in the magic that happens in the backend, i.e. how PHP and MySQL interact. Feel free to request developer access to the MediaWiki git repository whenever you're ready to join the Dark Side. ;-)
As for the Interface Messages Wiki, it works pretty much like any other MediaWiki wiki where the default language is English. To edit non-English messages, you have to append the language code to the page title. For example, the language code for Finnish is fi; therefore the Finnish translation of MediaWiki:Contactpage is located at s:w:mwmsg:MediaWiki:Contactpage/fi.
Editing a message that does not have any language code in it whatsoever overrides the translation for all languages. For example, if I wanted to change the "About {{SITENAME}}" message shown on the page footer in the Monobook skin (and a few other skins, too) for all languages, I would edit s:w:mwmsg:MediaWiki:Aboutsite; but if I only wanted to change the English (en) translation without overriding any other translations, I would edit s:w:mwmsg:MediaWiki:Aboutsite/en.
Message documentation is available for certain features in the Interface Messages Wiki's main namespace; you can also use ?uselang=qqx in the URL to see what system messages a page uses. It's not perfect, but it certainly is a very handy tool for translators. You might want to see this MediaWiki.org page for a couple screenshots of the uselang=qqx feature.
Finally, I realize that this process isn't very well documented. It's also true that not all internationalization messages are well documented and some aren't documented at all. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me or another Customer Support Team member.
All that being said, I've now given you administrator rights on the Interface Messages Wiki. Enjoy! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 11:39, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much for granting me admin rights on "mwmsg". For the record, Stargate Wiki is the only wiki I keep like this. As you may already see, I was attacked by an "Australian" guy who harrassed me for over a year (when you were in blackout), attempting to shut this wiki down by all means but he calmed down for now. The others wikis I maintain (not a lot for now) will remain on SW, I don't want to move them elswhere. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 12:18, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Small bug about centering with $mwhtml5[edit source]

Hi Jack
I see a small bug since you passed all the wikis in release 1.19.1. The portal cells are not centered anymore even with align="center". I read that it is caused by the activation by default of the parameter $wgHtml5. I disabled it on my English Stargate Wiki and all came back to normal. Is it possible please to set to "false" this parameter in all "my" wikis please? Thank you very much. Cheers. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 16:28, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi LIMAFOX76, thanks for finding this out! I've been looking for the root cause of that issue for a while, but I had totally forgotten about HTML5...
I noticed that you can "fix" the issue with CSS, but admittedly it's not the best possible solution, given that editing MediaWiki: pages requires admin rights. Then again there's been some discussion about deprecating inline styles, but I for one hope it'll be a while before that makes into a release of MediaWiki.
I've set $wgHtml5 to false for s:w:fr.24, s:w:fr.eureka, s:w:eureka, s:w:fr.stargate and s:w:labible. Let me know if I forgot a wiki or if you have any further requests, questions or thoughts. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:44, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, you didn't forget any wiki. ;-) --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 16:47, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Thrillville Wiki[edit source]

If not already, could you put Thrillville Wiki on cue and make me an admin? If no one has requested it, the idea was ditched. 17morgm (talk) 17:29, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

OK, I've added the wiki to our import queue. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:41, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

No active admins on http://awa.shoutwiki.com[edit source]

Could you make me an admin on AWA? The last and only admin that was there before is gone, and I'd like to help the site get back on track. 17morgm (talk) 16:12, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

You will need to contact the wiki's steward or bureaucrats about this request. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 19:11, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

All four of them (plus the two beauracrats) are gone, and both wikis are inactive. I need a staff member to do it for me.

We won't be granting you rights on this wiki. You have made no edits on the wiki, and you haven't tried contacting the steward or bureaucrats. It is not our intention to undermine them. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 19:44, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Twitter feed[edit source]

For some reason, on Template:Twitter on Fish Hooks Wiki, the "number" parameter doesn't work and shows the amount of tweets on the actual Twitter page without extending it. What's the problem? Phinbart - just one of the huge Bart fans! (talk) 12:24, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

I believe there was some confusion about parameter names; there is no "number" parameter to the <rss> tag, but rather a "max" parameter. See the RSS extension manual on MediaWiki.org for further info about using the RSS extension. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:29, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Monaco[edit source]

How did you guys get Monaco? I have a wiki separate from ShoutWiki that I run test code on, and I would like to use a familiar interface on it rather than Vector or Monobook. Could you tell me how you guys did it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 17morgm (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

We fixed Wikia's version of Monaco, which is in their SVN because their code often doesn't work out of the box with vanilla MediaWiki, and since its unsupported its more than likely not going to work with 1.19 either. --Lewis Cawte ShoutWiki Staff (talk) 18:56, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
What I need to know is, how did you fix it, and how can I get it to work on my site? I know where the repo is for it, but I can't get it going. How do I fix it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 17morgm (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!
Start debugging it, use your logs to your advantage, and your knowledge of PHP... other than that I can't tell you too much more about Wikia code, because I'm no expert in it. --Lewis Cawte ShoutWiki Staff (talk) 19:18, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Two resources you may want, is MediaWiki.org - mainly the manual namespace... also occasionally the guys in #MediaWiki on irc will be able to help you out with some stuff. --Lewis Cawte ShoutWiki Staff (talk) 19:19, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Ok, so how'd you install wikifactory? 98.31.11.227 22:15, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiFactory is a complicated MediaWiki extension written by and for Wikia. I can guarantee you that without extensive knowledge of MediaWiki's internals, you can't get it working. I don't see why you would need WikiFactory, but there are better alternatives out there which require no hacking whatsoever. But this is a conversation that we should probably be having at MediaWiki.org instead. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 14:09, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

The backup of my old wiki site[edit source]

Actually I don't want to build this wiki in future, but I would like to get the remains. :)

zh.madoka.shoutwiki.com

ps: I find this project http://archive.org/details/shoutwiki.com , but if you ask me, I think it's unnecessary to download whole 2.5 GB backup file to get the backup of my site. My site just include a few pages, so the backup may be small. It would be a good way to send me by email.

BTW: On the Vector skin, the search buttons in index page and other non-special pages are invalid. They are covered by the ad banner. The CSS #column-google should be: padding-top: 0px; top: 85px; instead of padding-top: 35px; top: 50px; . —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Summerking (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

The dumps hosted on Archive.org were originally created by and currently are maintained by a group known as ArchiveTeam. They are a third-party group that are not affiliated with ShoutWiki in any way. Hence we cannot guarantee anything regarding their dumps — but I've heard that they'd be of good quality, nevertheless.
I've asked Lcawte, our Chief Technical Officer, to be in touch with you regarding the zh.madoka backup.
Thank you for that CSS patch! While I myself was unable to reproduce the problem, I asked around and got a few people to test it out and they confirmed that your patch fixes the issue — thus it's live now. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 11:00, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

And for s:w:wt, please. Username (talk) 12:28, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Also, please, can you get interwiki right to admins? Username (talk) 13:14, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
I've added InstantCommons to s:w:wt, but the interwiki user right, which allows modifying interwiki links and interlanguage links via Special:Interwiki, is currently not granted to non-staff users due to the way our interwiki and interlanguage links are set up.
Simply put, interwikis are global (=shared between all ShoutWiki wikis) and thus we don't want anyone to be able to touch those; interlanguage links, on the other hand, are specific to a given wiki and we may grant admins the ability to modify them at a later date if there is sufficient demand for that.
For the time being, please contact me or another Customer Support Team member via the usual channels for all your interwiki and interlanguage links related questions, suggestions, issues, etc. and do keep in mind that in most cases you don't even need an interwiki link, you can just use a template: {{foo|Some page name|alternate link title}} and then the actual template would contain code like <span class="plainlinks">[http://foo.example.com/wiki/{{urlencode:{{{1}}}|WIKI}} {{{2|{{{1}}}}}}]. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:59, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Only allow signed in users to edit[edit source]

Jack, I've registered a wiki at http://bve.shoutwiki.com as a public wiki. It looks very good and we are almost ready to start it, we have one problem though. We do not want to allow people who are not signed in to edit. I've looked around the rights management special pages but couldn't find a way to do this. How can we achieve that? --Phontanka (talk) 19:37, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

There's no special page for managing these kind of things related to wiki configuration, yet anyway. This is somewhat of an architectural flaw in MediaWiki and the upstream developers are finally attempting to invest efforts into fixing this and making wiki configuration more flexible and modern. Some more info can be found at mw:Configuration management; I believe the original ETA for that was 2013 (Q1 or Q2, but I think we'll be lucky if we'll get it before Q1 2014).
Changing rights requires editing the wiki's settings file and as such, it's something only the staff can do at the moment (sadly). I've changed your wiki's configuration so that you need to be signed in to the wiki to edit, create new content or talk pages (you might also be interested in the official MediaWiki manual detailing what each user right does); if this is not what you wanted or if you have any further requests or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Happy editing! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 21:23, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
Jack, thank you very much for your timely response! Now it works the way we want it. --Phontanka (talk) 18:32, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Embedding Prezi[edit source]

Hi Jack,

How do I embed a prezi in my shoutwiki page? I tried to follow several online tutorials, but that didn't work.

Thanks a lot.

btw, check out my AnthroDef.shoutwiki.com, maybe you have some suggestions.

Thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benbelek (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

Hi Benbelek,
While I don't have any suggestions on how to improve the AnthroDef wiki at the moment, I'm interested in this Prezi thing — would you happen to have links to these online tutorials by any chance? You can embed a lot of content provided by diffrenrent providers via the YouTube extension, but at the moment, Prezi is not yet among the supported services. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:54, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
This is what I tried to use: http://lis5313.ci.fsu.edu/wiki/index.php/Embedding_Prezi_in_a_Wiki_Page

Semantic MediaWiki[edit source]

Hi Jack,
This post just to say that Semantic MediaWiki stable version 1.8 has been released. If you want to install it, you need to upgrade Validator up to version 0.5 too. Cheers. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 10:10, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, I'll see what we can do about it. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 23:08, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Jack,
Do you have any idea on when you will implement the last SMW version (1.8.0) as I still have a big issue with newly created pages with alpha version on all semantic wikis (see the Lcawte talk page. Thank you very much and I wish you an happy new year 2013. Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 12:47, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about the delay regarding getting this fixed; thanks to our hard-working CTO, Semantic MediaWiki should be functional again! On behalf of the entire staff team, I wish you and all other ShoutWiki users a very happy new year and may it be a good and prosperous one for all of us. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 23:37, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much Jack and Lewis. It seems to work well. Happy New Year for the staff and all Shoutwiki users. LIMAFOX76 (talk) 08:24, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

create a wiki[edit source]

  • Hello,You can like to wikia open create very wikis let us?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 12:10, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I quite don't understand your question. Anyone can create a wiki on ShoutWiki; there are some limits on that, namely that a user can create only five wikis — though looking after one wiki, let alone more, can be quite a task at times! Please take a look at Help:Creating a new wiki for more information. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 23:08, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
  • ok.--Msnhinet8 (talk) 01:11, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
  • But I very hope you can When open to apply for more than one wiki?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 09:11, 8 December 2012 (UTC) (我用google翻譯)
If you have already created five (5) wikis, then you can't create any more wikis. Do note that maintaining even one, let alone five, successful wikis is a hard job and it requires a lot of time and dedication. With that in mind, I'll note that it's possible to have one of your pre-existing wikis deleted if you want to be able to create a new wiki, but please consider it well — wiki deletion is a rather permanent operation. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:10, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Adding google analytics to my wiki[edit source]

Hi Jack, it's Ben again from AnthroDef.

I was wondering if you could help me in adding google analytics to my page. I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.

Ben —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benbelek (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

You can add Google Analytics by adding the appropriate JavaScript code to your wiki's MediaWiki:Common.js page. Adding it to MediaWiki:Common.js (as opposed to, say, MediaWiki:Monobook.js) ensures that it is loaded for all users on all page views. Still, I'd prefer if you'd provide your users a way to opt out from Google Analytics tracking. Please let me know if you need any further help with this issue. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:54, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, first of all thanks a lot. I'm not sure I got it right though - the analytics software doesn't recognize that it's installed. Would you mind having a look to see if I did it right? Thanks a million!

Ben —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benbelek (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

I tried the Google Analytics on my wiki. Can you please see if there are any errors? I don't see GBA Wiki showing up on Google.

I'm not very familiar with Google Analytics myself (the last time I've had to use it was many, many years ago — we at ShoutWiki favor open source solutions), but maybe there's a delay of some kind? As far as I can see, the JS is just fine and it should work. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:17, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Adding a new input method in my wiki[edit source]

Hi Jack. I cannot use my preferred Bengali input method in my workspace at office. Only way is to install the input method in my wiki via a javascript. The javascript is already there: http://42.shoutwiki.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Unijoy.js Can you tell me how to use this in my wiki editor, and if possible also on other places of the wiki, i.e. on the search box etc. It would be really helpful. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 13:39, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Muhammad2017, I made a few small and insignificant style changes to the script. But to actually invoke the input method, you need to call makeUnijoyEditor for each text input (with the textarea's unique ID as the parameter to the function). For example:
makeUnijoyEditor( 'wpTextbox1' ); // main edit area on action=edit
makeUnijoyEditor( 'wpSummary' ); // edit summary on action=edit
makeUnijoyEditor( 'searchInput' ); // search box on all pages
Note that the above example code isn't the best possible code sample out there, but you get the idea. If you need something a bit more automatic, let me know. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:54, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Jack, sorry that I am familiar neither with java nor with calling a java function in MediaWiki. Could you clarify a bit more?- where should I call this function using these codes? in MediaWiki:Common.js? And what is the unique ID of the textarea of a certain page? Should I write the ID in place of 'wpTextbox1'? And yes, it would be very good if the system could be a bit more automatic, that is if you can spend some more time. It would be really nice if after entering the editor of any page in that wiki I could activate or deactivate the unijoy editor by something on the wiki toolbar. And thanks for all the things you have done so far. :) -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 00:00, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
I've added some code to s:w:42:MediaWiki:Common.js, which should load the Unijoy parser for any and all <input> elements that have the type="text" attribute. Do note that the input elements also need to have an ID for Unijoy to be activated (it's a requirement of the Unijoy code, not something I made up). You may also need to purge your browser's cache for the changes to show up (CTRL + F5 on Internet Explorer/Mozilla Firefox should do this).
Right now my code is loaded automagically for all users on all pages; if it's causing problems, please let me know as soon as possible! I didn't add a way to toggle it on/off yet, but I can take a look at that later on. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:54, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for everything again. I still have no idea where to begin. Let's say I am creating a new page. After going to the editing window what should I do to write with this input method? I do not know how to begin. Tried many things but the input system can be found nowhere. Sorry for my ignorance. :) -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 10:46, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Turns out that my code has some bugs — the main editing area (the element with the ID "wpTextbox1" is a textarea, as opposed to being an input with the type="text" attribute, hence it won't active on the main editing area right now. The JS gadget activates if your user language (which you can set via Special:Preferences) is the same as the wiki's content language (which is Bengali — language code bn).
I'll try to fine-tune and improve the code in the future to make it better and more usable, but sadly I cannot offer you a decent estimated time for arrival (ETA) right now. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for everything. Now I see that I can write Bengali in the search bar, but I do not know how to turn it off, or switch from Bangla to English. It's okay if it takes time. I will be waiting. Thanks again. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 12:24, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
My implementation is rather buggy and it lacks some features, such as the ability to be able to switch between languages (and, as you've probably noticed, it doesn't activate for textarea>s, such as the main editing area on editing mode).
I hate to keep you waiting as I can't promise you a definitive ETA of any kind; what you're asking is certainly doable, but not as simple as it seems. It could be a good idea to ask on a few non-ShoutWiki MediaWiki places for help, too; such as the #mediawiki IRC channel (on irc.freenode.net server), the mediawiki-l and/or wikitech-l mailing lists or MediaWiki.org's support desk. MediaWiki.org's communication page has more info about these communication channels. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:17, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jack, Im new memeber and I having some trouble to render or parser the wikipedia Template infobox football team isnt generating the little infobox square, appreciate any help —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Panama2005 (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

Hi, you have to find any class infobox-related inside the Wikipedia Common.css page in order to retrieve the real shape of your infobox. Copy all the implied lines, paste them into your wiki's MediaWiki:Common.css page, save, purge your cache and voilà. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 12:46, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Panama2005, what's your wiki so that I can take a closer look at the issue(s)? Also, a good rule of thumb is to never, ever copy templates from Wikipedia! While you are free to do that from a legal standpoint — Wikimedia wikis, such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc. are licensed under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, just like many ShoutWiki wikis — it's not wise to do that from a practical point of view; the English Wikipedia's templates are nothing but a big, horrible mess. Many things that they do with the templates could be done in a lot simpler and cleaner way (infoboxes, for example). --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:54, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Google analytics[edit source]

Hi Jack,

Not sure if you got this message (sent it to your user page on AnthroDef), so I'm sending it again just in case:

Thanks a lot for your help with installing google analytics in my wiki!

Next thing I would like to do is add those G+1, twitter, and facebook logos so people can recommend my site. Any tips on how to do that? And also, would you mind removing the 'ShoutWiki is looking to hire three new interns!' caption? It just gives the wrong idea about the site when it shows up as an abstract (like when someone posts the site address on facebook). Thanks!

Ben —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Benbelek (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

I'm sure that there are plenty of pre-existing social media sharing widget implementations out there, but it depends on a few factors, such as:
  1. what skin your wiki is using
  2. where do you want to place the links
Once you know where you want to place the links (and what links, to be exact), let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.
As for the GlobalNotice, we'd definitely prefer you not to remove it. Mind you, we are planning on removing it soon, but in all honesty, it's not our fault if the algorithms of certain (social media) sites are too dumb to differentiate user interface parts and actual page content.
Also, Ben, could you please sign your messages with four tildes (like this: ~~~~)? When you've done that and you save the page, the tildes are automatically converted to a link to your user page and talk page and the correct (UTC) timestamp is appended. Thanks!
--Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:17, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Default Skin[edit source]

Hi Jack, I'm from Indonesia so please forgive me for my English. If it's possible, can you change the default skin of my shoutwiki (wordcraft) to Vector ? Also is it possible to have more than one stewards for my shoutwiki? Thanks in advance. --Kappa145 (talk) 11:34, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Kappa145, I've changed the default skin for s:w:wordcraft from Modern to Vector.
As for stewards, the steward right is granted automatically by the wiki creation script to the person who created the wiki. The idea is that the steward is some kind of a "superuser", so to say, as they can revoke all user rights (except some global rights, such as staff rights) and Help:Database download|generate a database dump.
That being said, we're not opposed to a wiki having more than one steward — but as you can't grant the steward right yourself, you'll need to inform us (via the contact form, for example) to which user you want to grant the steward rights and on which wiki.
Also, there's nothing wrong with your English. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 10:51, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
I see, thanks for the fairly fast reply and response. I'm really appreciate it. 203.78.119.76 11:46, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Video Game Wiki[edit source]

Shouldn't there be one? I already created four wikis and I don't want to waste my fifth one. I'm sorry for requeating this, but can you please create a Video Game ShoutWiki (http://videogames.shoutwiki.com)? Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 23:48, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

A video game wiki would be very cool to have! However, as is it with wikis generally, starting a new one is easy, but building content and attracting users there can be quite tricky at times. If you already have founded other wikis, you may want to consider focusing on them first before starting new ones. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:49, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

上載圖片[edit source]

  • 我無法上載自己的圖片到我的維基耶,原因是容量太大,請問我該怎麼辦呢?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 10:10, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Are you using the standard upload form — Special:Upload — or the multiple upload interface, Special:MultipleUpload? On what wiki is this happening? Do note that you can't upload files larger than 2MB in filesize currently; there has been some discussion about raising the upload limit on Bugzilla (bug #48).
If you're using Special:MultiUpload, the total file size needs to be reasonable — maybe not 2MB, but certainly not 50MB either; if the total file size of all the files you're trying to upload is too large, you'll definitely hit one (or multiple) of our server-side limits for uploads.
Also, could you please write your questions in English in the future? I don't understand Chinese, so I had to get your message translated by a friend before I was able to reply to it; my user page, the "Languages I speak" section has more information about the languages I can communicate in. Thanks! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:49, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Enabling Scribunto[edit source]

Can you enable Scribunto extension for my wiki?--CassiodoroVicinetti (talk) 14:51, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm not too keen on enabling it just yet; it's listed as a beta extension on MediaWiki.org, it's still under (heavy) development from what I've understood and Lua isn't even deployed to any major Wikimedia Foundation sites yet, unless I'm badly mistaken here. I'd suggest waiting for a while.
By the way, what would be the use case for Scribunto? What kind of complicated templates would you like to replace with Lua? --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:35, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
Wrong: it's enabled in all Wikipedia sites (see m:Lua deployments). Well, it was just for testing for the moment, but it has a great potential for the future.--CassiodoroVicinetti (talk) 16:55, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Not sure if this is a bug or not[edit source]

The Community sidebox on the sidebar does not show the correct amount of articles that are actually on my wiki, and I was curious if the ShoutWiki staff are aware of this or not.

I wasn't sure if I needed to submit a Bugzilla report on this or not (I didn't see anything about this on the Bugzilla tracker), but I thought I should make mention of this.

On a different note, I was wondering if Shoutwiki needs any help with blocking spammers or removing spam pages. If so, I would like to offer my services in that regard.

Finally, aside from the fact WikiEditor is not an available default or requestable extension (I already have a suitable gadget installed as a substitute on my wiki), I can't say I have any complaints about ShoutWiki (I'm curious why WikiEditor isn't an option, but I'm not unhappy about it not being an option). In fact, I just wanted to add I'm quite pleased with ShoutWiki if for no other reasons that (A) it's not Wikia (I loathe that hideous Oasis skin) and (B) the technical service here is far more prompt and helpful, which I'm very grateful for.

Arcane (talk) 00:34, 22 March 2013 (UTC)Arcane

Hi Arcane and thanks for your feedback!
What's the wiki where the bug is happening? How many articles does it say there are and how many there are in reality? I wasn't aware of this bug and there most certainly isn't anything about it on Bugzilla either, so please do register a Bugzilla account (if you already don't have one) and submit a bug report so that we can get this tracked and fixed!
It might also be that you need to refresh certain cached data via Special:RefreshSpecial (requires bureaucrat rights). Thought that shouldn't have anything to do with the article count, but it's worth a try anyway.
As for spammers, they're a common nuisance. We naturally try to do our best to keep them away, but every now and then some manage to slip past our filters. If you find any such cases, please notify the Customer Support Team via the usual channels (the contact form, our IRC channel, e-mail, etc.) so that we can block the spambot accounts, IPs and spammed URLs to prevent further spamming.
WikiEditor is an available option and if I recall correctly, we have some wikis where it's enabled already. Please do let us know if you want it enabled for your wiki and we'll toggle it on.
We are pleased to hear that you're pleased with the service. :-) It's what we've been aiming for — happy editors, better wikis, more time for the content (and less time to focus on meta issues like spambots, software upgrades, etc.)! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 09:53, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll be registering a Bugzilla account soon with more detailed information, but on my wiki (the MediaWiki Beginners Wiki), I currently have 28 articles in the main namespace alone, but the community box only reports that I have six articles so far. I tried the RefreshSpecial option on my wiki, but this doesn't seem to affect things.
As for enabling WikiEditor, that would be appreciated. I didn't notice it as either a default option or an option by request on the ShoutWiki Extension Help page, so this may need clarification.

create a wiki[edit source]

While creating a wiki is easy, making it successful and popular is everything but easy. This is the reason why wiki creation has some limits in place — we wish that our users focus on the wikis they've already created and making them successful before starting a new one. The current limits are 1 wiki per day, with a maximum of one user having 5 wikis (as you're probably aware). Of our top 50 wikis, only one is written in a variant of Chinese (Taiwan Chinese — language code zh-tw — to be exact) and it's not a wiki where you are an admin.
Given all this, I would strongly urge you to focus on the wikis you've already created. That being said, the limits are not set in stone and we're more than happy to discuss (in English) about the creation of "additional" wikis; please contact us in such case. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:39, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

ShoutWiki's New Upload Size Limit[edit source]

I noticed that ShoutWiki's new upload limit is now five megabytes. If you changed this then thank you for doing so. I had problems with this upload limit up to two megabytes. So if you changed it then thank you. Also, the Wanted Categories, Unused Images, Wanted Pages, and other related functions do not seem to work on Shout Wiki or the spinoff wikis. That also needs a bit of fixing. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 23:45, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, it certainly didn't change automagically. ;-)
As for cached special pages, you (or if you're not a bureaucrat, then another bureaucrat) have to update them via Special:RefreshSpecial every now and then. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 08:18, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

模板無法保存[edit source]

Please write your messages in English! I don't understand Chinese and it's impossible for me to try to track down someone who does understand it each time you've left me a message. I and the other staff members are willing to do our best to help you out, but we can't help you if we don't understand what you're writing. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 14:36, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Need help with the SocialProfile extension[edit source]

I have a localhost wiki I test extensions and wikicode on, and I've been having trouble getting the SocialProfile extension (version 1.5 on a MW 1.20.3 setup) to work.

I left a message about this on the discussion page for the extension on MW.org, but since you seem to be here more often, I thought I'd let you know here:

The issue report in question.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but it refuses to install properly, even though I have followed the installation instructions to the letter.

If you could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.

P.S. - I hope that contacting you about this issue here was not inappropriate in any way. If so, I would like to apologize if that was the case. Arcane (talk) 21:01, 13 April 2013 (UTC)Arcane

Replied on MediaWiki.org to keep the discussion centralized and since it's not a ShoutWiki issue. I strongly recommend any and all users to post on MediaWiki.org and on the appropriate extension talk page so that a greater number of people will see the message and maybe someone might be able to help you out. After all, the code's free and open source! Though alas, in reality it seems that I'm the one who ends up replying to any and all questions about the extensions that I maintain... --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:14, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
I replied to your post on MW.org, will go there for further inquiries regarding this matter, thank you for your assistance. BTW, speaking of your extensions, I love your NewSignupPage extension, and I even promoted it's usefulness on my own wiki.

New Skin?[edit source]

I read somewhere on the blog that you guys were creating a new skin. Is anyone working on that or are there even still plans to bring it up? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DJ m0m0 (talkcontribs) 01:27, 21 April 2013‎.
Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

A new skin is very much on the roadmap, but we haven't had as much time to work on that as we would've liked to have. Some mockups (both images and HTML) were created and we're definitely planning on taking a look at those later on, improving them and finally turning the mockups into a real, functioning skin!
You might be interested in taking a look at our premium skins, which are currently active on the Interface Messages Wiki. Some of them are pretty nifty, even if I say so myself. ;-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 11:02, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Muhammad2017bot permission in chalachitra wiki[edit source]

I have created a bot in the "chalachitra" wiki named "Muhammad2017bot". I am using pywikipediabot to run this. But I think the bot does not have permission to change anything as I am getting the error: Unknown Error. API Error code:permissiondenied Information:Permission denied. I have already grant this bot account all kinds of permission: bot, admin etc. Could you please do something about this? Many thanks. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 14:48, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm afraid I haven't used pywikipediabot in ages myself, but Solar Dragon might've used it a bit more recently, so you should try contacting him. You could also visit the #pywikipediabot IRC channel on the freenode network for real-time pywikipediabot help. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Jack pointed me here since I'm a Pywikipedia developer. Could you explain what script/code you were trying to run? And what page you got the error on? It would make it much easier to debug then. Legoktm (talk) 04:26, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

RuneWiki[edit source]

Moikka

Suomalaiset palveluntarjoajat puolestaan tottelevat mitä päättömimpiä The Pirate Bay -estojakin, joten mikseivät myös pitäisi käyttäjiään kurissa, vandalisoimasta ShoutWikin wikejä...
Laitathan minulle viestiä, mikäli tarvitset apua minkä tahansa RuneWikiin, ShoutWikiin tai wikeihin yleisesti liittyvän asian suhteen.
Iloisia muokkaushetkiä RuneWikin parissa! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry to bug you...(again)[edit source]

hey, Jack. Was wondering if you could take a look at http://writing.shoutwiki.com and see if it's worthy of being put under the "ShoutWiki Messages" sidebox. Notice that the Main Page has the original ShoutWiki Main Page design but in a new updated form. Feel free to copy it for yourself. ALSO: I just want to tell you that you guys have been doing a stupendous job on SW. Great work! DJ m0m0 (talk) 01:14, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

The wiki itself seems very fascinating, but judging from the amount of content pages (which most certainly isn't the only thing to look at, but it's a decent metric) it could use some work before "spotlighting" it.
And thank you for the kind words — we greatly value your feedback and it helps us in shaping the site and deciding what features to implement, when and how. :-) Positive or negative, feedback is always useful to have, as ShoutWiki is made for you! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:38, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
What do I have to do to get in the spotlight? (I need a full list of details) DJ m0m0 (talk) 18:09, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
There aren't any hard requirements for that for the time being, I'm afraid — we will show off what we deem important in the NewsBox; usually these items are related to more official ShoutWiki things, such as software upgrades, new features or quarterly reports, but every now and then we just might promote a wiki that we deem suitable for it. My suggestion for you would be to gather some interested people and improve the wiki together and we could take a look at it later this year. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:59, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Me borraste la wiki[edit source]

Podés explicarme por qué?

Muchas gracias —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bettinafratta (talkcontribs) 01:25, 9 May 2013.
Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

Sorry, my Spanish is quite rusty so I'm not even sure if I understood the question, but here goes anyway...
This wiki, ShoutWiki Hub at http://www.shoutwiki.com, is a wiki about ShoutWiki and the wikis we host. The only kinds of pages that should be on this wiki are pages about ShoutWiki (such as ShoutWiki staff, the help pages and so on) and pages about our wikis (such as 24, Pokémon, etc.). Any and all other main namespace pages are considered out of project scope and we will delete such pages.
Creating a new wiki is fast, easy and naturally free, so if you want a place to put your pages, please create a new wiki (or alternatively, join an existing one, i.e. if you'd want to write about Pokémon in Finnish, it'd be much preferrable if you were to join the pre-existing Finnish Pokémon wiki hosted by ShoutWiki rather than creating a new wiki which overlaps the current one in scope). Let us know if you need any help with that and we'll be glad to help you out! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:59, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

How would I use different Monaco skin themes per page?[edit source]

I was thinking about creating a subsection on my wiki about how to customize Monaco (I find it very beginner friendly and wanted to devote a section of my wiki to it), and I was wondering how I would go about customizing pages to show different Monaco skin themes per page, similar to how the SkinPerPage extension allows for different skins on a per page basis.

If possible, I'd like to know if I need to implement a style sheet or something similar for theme switching, as I wanted to create a template for it to make my demonstration pages on the different Monaco styles easier to set up.

Also, on a somewhat related note, would it be possible to find out how the community sidebox could be set up (particularly the recent changes/latest activity section) outside of ShoutWiki on another Monaco setup? My interest is because I've done a little skin work and I'd like to know how it was done here on ShoutWiki (if that is allowed, if not I understand).

Arcane (talk) 02:26, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Arcane

There isn't a simple way to do what you're requesting at the moment. A possible option would be to hack the SkinPerPage extension to create a new ThemePerPage extension; another way would be to do what you want to with per-page CSS, like this:
.page-My_cool_page {
	/*
Change "beach" to the desired theme name in the URL below.
Available options are: beach, brick, carbon, forest, gaming, jade, moonlight, obsession, pink, ruby, sky, slate, smoke, spring
Including the default (sapphire) theme is somewhat trickier as Monaco's core CSS files (the files in /skins/Monaco/monaco/css) already "contain" that.

Feel free to change "www" to your wiki's subdomain, too. :-)
	*/
	@import url('http://www.shoutwiki.com/w/skins/Monaco/monaco/beach/css/main.css');
}
The <body> HTML tag of each page contains a class that is unique to that page; for the page "My cool page", the class is called page-My_cool_page.
What do you mean by "how the community sidebox could be set up outside of ShoutWiki on another Monaco setup" exactly? Deep down inside, it's just PHP (+the necessary CSS and JavaScript bits and pieces) and the same is true here, too. The skin file does an internal call to the public-facing MediaWiki API (which is pretty ugly and generally quite wrong, but in my defence, I didn't write the code originally :-). I'm not sure why you'd want to implement this on an off-ShoutWiki site and how hard it would be (definitely requires some programming skills, either JavaScript or then PHP) — the publicly available "monaco-port" is quite different from the version of Monaco running on our servers, which is understandable, as the former was created almost two years after we started working on our Monaco.
I hope this clears it up for you, but please do ask me if there's something I didn't explain well enough — these are complicated techical things and programmers often make certain, sometimes invalid, presumptions. ;-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:49, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Actually, as for the community sidebox question, I assumed it was rather difficult to program. I've been tinkering on my own custom version of Monaco (based off the Monaco port), and I was curious how difficult it would be to make my own version (I like how it's implemented on ShoutWiki, definitely better and less intrusive than the Wikia version :D ), and based on what you've told me, it seems like I'd have my work cut out for me (I'm a semi-skilled novice at PHP, somewhat competent at CSS, barely know what I'm doing with Javascript). I assumed the code for this was not publicly available (I also assume the ShoutWiki SVN is only accessible to ShoutWiki staff) and/or extremely customized and thus not easy to port, but I do appreciate what you have shared with me so far. I also wanted to add that if you would like a bug tester for extensions or skins, I'd like to offer my spare time to help out ShoutWiki if you guys need it.
As for the per-page theme information, I'll probably go for the per-page CSS route if I get my demonstration pages of the various Monaco themes off the ground, so the tips on how to do that are appreciated.

admin[edit source]

  • Hello Jack:

I still don't understand Chinese, so I'm going to have to make a wild guess here. This wiki, the English-language ShoutWiki Hub, has enough administrators as the ShoutWiki staff look after this, but the Taiwan Chinese ShoutWiki Hub has exactly one administrator who hasn't edited in a couple years and we'd be interested in having ShoutWiki Hub's content translated to Chinese, so if you want to, you're free to adopt the Taiwan Chinese ShoutWiki Hub and start translating pages from this wiki to that. Let me know what you want to do. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 10:14, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Small question about terms of use-[edit source]

  • I already sent an Email about this but never got a reply and I am sort of in a rush so excuse me for asking twice.

My question is this:
I didn't see any mentions in the ToS regarding deletion due to content. Am I to understand that my wiki will be within ShoutWikis rules as long as the content is not illegal/pornographic? Hazelludas (talk) 07:40, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

  • Actually, if i'm already contacting you, I have a few more questions-
  • 1. How do I change my favicon?
  • 2. How do I change the skin?
  • 3. How do I change the privacy settings so that you have to registed to edit?

I am sorry to bug you with this, but your help pages have proven utterly unhelpful. Hazelludas (talk) 08:25, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Hey, obviously I'm not Jack, but I think I can help. Firstly, generally all wikis are accepted at ShoutWiki, though yes: illegal and pornographic-related ones are not for obvious reasons. As for the other questions:
  1. To change your favicon, upload a new one to File:Favicon.ico on your wiki. It must be the ".ico" filetype.
  2. To change your skin, you need to use CSS. Say you were wanting to change the Monobook skin, you'd go to the page MediaWiki:Monobook.css and modify it there. The same goes for other skins like Monaco (MediaWiki:Monaco.css).
  3. I'm fairly certain you can not change this yourself. Only staff would be able to change this. However, I'm not entirely sure how possible this actually is, so Jack can definitively answer that for you.
The help pages will hopefully be overhauled in the near future, with an entirely new, helpful design! Hopefully I could help you with what I could, and Jack can sort out the rest! —Will Kilgour (talk) 10:27, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Hi Hazelludas - I replied to your email on the 22nd. Note on the email you used a hotmail.com address and not a hotmail.co.il like your account is registered to. To change the default skin and privacy settings, just email us with the wiki name and the settings you want and we'll change it for you.--Cook879 ShoutWiki Staff talk 21:44, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Seems that Will and Cook879 were faster than I was — kudos to both of you!
You might also be interested in our wiki deletion policy and the "content" and "changes to wikis" sections of our terms of use.
I'd also be interested in knowing what you mean by "your help pages have proven utterly unhelpful". We've spent considerable time on writing and improving them and trying to make them as understandable and accessible as possible, but if it turns out that this effort has more or less failed, we'd be curious as to how to fix it and make the help pages useful to you — we, the staff, have been using MediaWiki for years and as such, we don't need the help pages, but we'd like if it was easy for new users to jump in and start editing, which is why we've written all those help pages. Thanks! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 10:14, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
  • Hi, thank you for the help. I have a followup question though. What would be considered "hateful"? You see, the wiki I run is a parody review site of bad webcomic. We find bad comics on the internet and write articles criticizing their flaws. We had a problem with out previous host because some of the artist complained about receiving harsh reviews. Our site is not hateful, but some people just can't take being told their art is not good. I would like to move here, but first I want to make sure we will not run into this problem again.

Regarding the help being unhelpful - I didn't mean to offend. But a lot of the help pages explain what things are but not what to do about them. Sorry I can't think of a better way to explain and thank you for the quick replay. (Now that I think of it I really did put down the wrong Email when I sent that question) Hazelludas (talk) 18:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Based on what you wrote, your wiki sounds just fine. Healthy criticism is obviously fair game and people should learn from it instead of getting angry over it — just think of all the software developers and their products, for example; without criticism, the things we use on a daily basis (browsers, e-mail clients, web sites, you name it) would be full of bugs if developers couldn't be criticised.
No offense taken; I'm sure that you're right and that's why I'd like to hear suggestions for improving the help pages, from you and from everyone else. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:47, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Thank you for all the help guys. We will start moving our wiki in the next few days... I have one last request, can you please change the privecy setting so that only people who register can edit? I made this wiki in a haste to test it and was going to delete and recreate it with all the settings done right, but now I have run out of time, the old wiki is about to be deleted and my home computer is not working and I am forced to deal with this from work.... Bad luck I guess... Anyway, this is the wiki in question-

http://badwebcomicswiki.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
Please change the privecy setting for me and thank you for all the help. Hazelludas (talk) 17:54, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Changed, enjoy! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:18, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

ClearView RC Wiki update problem ... and a question[edit source]

Hi Jack

It appears that there's a problem updating a pge in the above mentioned wiki. It tells me that sam blocker doesn't allow tto save an edit becaus something points to goo.gl, Wich in fact it isn't true there's no external links in that page. There only links internaal to this specifi wiki ( i can mail you the page i'm trying to save if needed)

And the question.. Its posible to ge rid of the "Community" and "Shoutwiki Messages" boxes on the sidebar when using Monaco skin?

Thanks for your time

Nikorc (talk) 13:20, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Already found the problem. The ofending link was in an included template

Only the question remains open

Nikorc (talk) 13:44, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

It's possible to hide the boxes with CSS, but I'm not sure why you'd want to. The NewsBox ("ShoutWiki messages") contains announcements from ShoutWiki, and the community box shows some recent edits and provides quick shortcuts to your personal pages etc. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:47, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Equations[edit source]

It seems shoutwiki cannot parse formulas in some cases, the cases are so strange that I cannot figure out when the problem is occurring. For example this works,

F = q \left(E + \frac{v}{c}\times B \right) : <math>F = q \left(E + \frac{v}{c}\times B \right)</math>

But if I make F boldface it does not work:

\mathbf{F} = q \left(E + \frac{v}{c}\times B \right) : <math>\mathbf{F} = q \left(E + \frac{v}{c}\times B \right)</math>

But the problem is not even with boldface because normally it works:

\mathbf{D} : <math>\mathbf{D}</math>

Sometime subscripting a number causes problem:

x_0 : <math>x_0</math>

But

x_0 = \sigma_8 : <math>x_0=\sigma_8</math>

But separately they work:

\sigma_8 : <math>\sigma_8</math>

Any solutions??? -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 10:26, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

What an unusual bug! You can work around it by going to your preferences and choosing the new "MathJax" option; this is the best option for most modern browsers. After choosing this option and saving your preferences, you may need to purge the page cache to see the changes. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 16:46, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

I noticed SocialProfile is broken on MW 1.21[edit source]

I can already guess why: their new Content Handler has something to do with it.

I'm just letting you know I noticed it doesn't work right on my wiki, but I assume you are aware, and I just wanted to wish you the best on getting it fixed whenever you can do so.

Arcane (talk) 18:35, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Arcane

Yep, I've figured out that much and filed upstream bug #49280 yesterday. Still, it doesn't exactly help since the damage has already been done. Obviously we'll do our best to try to fix the bug, but I can't promise you a definitive ETA or anything as this isn't exactly a trivial thing to fix. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:41, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

I would like to help translate ShoutWiki into ZH-CN.[edit source]

Hi Jack. I am a senior student at Fudan University, Shanghai China.

I am currently running a private wiki for student union here.

I think that if I translate the wiki into Chinese, it would help a lot to my fellows.

What should I do to help with translation?

--Siafxyy (talk) 13:15, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Siafxyy, great to hear that you're interested in translating the ShoutWiki Hub to Chinese!
We have a (Taiwan) Chinese Hub with some translated content at zh-tw.shoutwiki.com (there is an open bug about moving that wiki to zh.shoutwiki.com) — you're free to edit over there and create/update the translations as necessary. We might look into setting up LanguageConverter later on so that we could have essentially one Chinese-language ShoutWiki Hub with proper variant support, just like how the Chinese Wikipedia works, instead of having a wiki for each variant.
I can grant you administrator rights on that wiki if you need those, as it seems that the wiki's original founder hasn't edited since early 2011 and the wiki hasn't had many edits recently either.
If, however, you prefer a fresh start, you're free to create zh-cn.shoutwiki.com via our wiki creation tool. Have a look at Help:Creating a new wiki if you need help with that (you probably don't, though, since you've already created a wiki ;-).
For starters, you might want to see if there are translated versions of the pages in Category:About ShoutWiki and the terms of use and the privacy policy; those, especially the latter two, are pretty much the most important pages in any Hub wiki. (It should be noted that if translations of the terms of use differ from the English source text, the English version prevails.) After that, there are the help pages — translating those is quite a job!
If you have any questions, suggestions, feedback, etc. please don't hesitate to contact me.
Again, thank you for volunteering to translate ShoutWiki Hub into Chinese — we really appreciate it! :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 14:48, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi Jack. Thank you for your detailed reply.
I decide not to disturb the zh-tw.shoutwiki.com one or create a zh-cn one until I translate the terms of use and the privacy policy as you say so.
So how could I add a page onto the original one in zh-cn? I've noticed that there are other versions such as Suomi and Français.
Thank you for your time.

We can set up the interlanguage links between zh-cn.shoutwiki.com and the other Hubs (i.e. fi.shoutwiki.com, the Finnish Hub, www.shoutwiki.com (this site!), the English Hub and so on) once the wiki exists. Then it's possible to interlink the Chinese version of the terms of use and the other versions (English, Finnish, French, etc.).

GIF thumbnails not working[edit source]

Hi. It seems any GIF uploaded since June 3, 2013 can not produce thumbnails. Only the full-size version of the GIF can be viewed. Please check the GIFs listed in the upload log here:

I waited til now to report it here because I noticed someone else reported it higher up, and on Facebook. It is not just the thumbnails on the image description pages that can not be seen. Any thumbnail size will not work for GIFs uploaded since June 3.

GIFs uploaded before then are fine. --Timeshifter (talk) 10:15, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Timeshifter, thanks for reporting this.
This issue was originally reported by DarkShadow a couple lines above you. We tried fixing the problem by changing our version of ImageMagick (the image thumbnailing program) to a different one, but that in turn caused bug #218 without actually fixing even the underlying issue, so we had to roll that change back.
Rest assured that we're well aware of the issue and we're actively researching the causes and trying to find a fix to it, but right now I'm going to have to ask you to bear with us on this. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 22:19, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
OK. Out of curiosity how does one find out what version of ImageMagick is being used? I do not see it listed on Special:Version. --Timeshifter (talk) 07:51, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm sure that there was a time when Special:Version used to display stuff like ImageMagick version, in addition to the standard PHP+DBMS+MW version stuff, but maybe that feature was pulled out or something...in any case, here's the output of convert --version:
Version: ImageMagick 6.8.5-10 2013-06-16 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2013 ImageMagick Studio LLC
Features: DPC OpenMP
Delegates: ps x zlib

Thanks. I have no idea how you did it though. :)
What is convert --version
And how does one use it to find the version?
Just trying to figure out some more about the innards of MediaWiki installations. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:59, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
convert --version is the command line (CLI) command I ran on our server to get you the version data; convert is the name of the ImageMagick binary (the executable file). --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:18, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Making private wiki's public[edit source]

Hey, is there any way to make a private wiki public? I've been looking the help pages around but I don't see anywhere where they mention it. Mattroks101 (talk) 01:26, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, we can do that on request. Just let us know if you'd want that done! There isn't a special page interface or anything that'd allow you to change it yourself at the moment. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:57, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

delete[edit source]

can you delete user's accounts --N64dude (talk) 18:26, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

No, MediaWiki doesn't really support account deleting as that'd break the referential integrity of the database. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:57, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

ok can i talk to you on chat its important. --N64dude (talk) 19:25, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
