Blocking and Protection[edit]

Generally we only need to block IP addresses if the spam attempts are persistent. The idea is to keep the AbuseFilter log from filling up with their attempts. Meanwhile, IP addresses could be dynamic, so blocking them could block people we don't intend. Similarly, we don't need to protect pages that don't exist, especially from IP addresses, since IP addresses can't create them, anyway, unless they're Talk:. Anonymous users are allowed to talk, unless it's spam. --Saftzie (talk) 17:30, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

I protected the page from creation to keep abuse log from filling up with constant attempts to create it. If IPs are not allowed to create non-talk pages anyway, then why not just ask staff (ping Jack Phoenix, Lcawte) to restrict createpage to registered accounts (createtalk is a separate right, so talk pages wouldn't be affected) instead of using AbuseFilter? --miki-- (talk) 21:00, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
The Abuse Log is hardly filling up with attempts to create the page. There are occasional attempts to create the page, especially compared to how frequent spam was even a few months ago. --Saftzie (talk) 15:36, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
