Greetings. I'm just curious, being the admin of a humble wiki.

Is there a way to access and see user registration information? Chiefly the email they register an account with. My wiki occationally gets vandals who try to delete stuff, and I'm curious to see if contacting them directly and asking them to more politely join our forum and discuss content on our wiki that they dont like would be more fruitful.

...but I can't see how i can access that data, if its at all there to be found. Just wondering. --Webkilla (talk) 16:19, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

tl,dr: Nope.
The longer answer: There exists an extension (called LookpUser) to do exactly what you're describing, but on ShoutWiki it's limited to staff only for obvious privacy concerns.
I can appreciate the effort and I think it's admirable to wish to engage with the userbase that much, even when we're talking about people who haven't made good-faith edits. Perhaps a simple block and a more elaborate block message would do the trick?
Also, I'd like to note that on a general level, we've curbed email-related abuse pretty well and we have a number of custom things in place to prevent certain common email-related abuse mechanisms commonly abused by spambots and the like. Of course no system is ever perfect, which is why I've been investigating new and creative ways to tighten the security related to this aspect even further; hopefully I'll get the relevant code changes shipped with the magical 1.35 upgrade. ;-) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 16:51, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough. I just wish there was a way to reach these people who take offense to our webcomic reviews, because we really don't mind talking about what they dont like on the forum... if only they would actually try to talk it out before starting to blank pages. --Webkilla (talk) 18:22, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
There's Special:EmailUser, which assumes that the users have both registered email addresses and enabled contacting them via email. I don't use it, and (based on Jack's comments above) its utility may be limited here. Also, I think you may be overestimating the civility of vandals. --Saftzie (talk) 18:23, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
Hmm, interesting. No, the user in question didn't appear to have registered a valid email address for that to work. Say, as another way to reach out to would-be vandals: Is there a way to change or add text to the Create Account page? Basically I want to add a plea for new users to join the forum first, before they start editing or vandalizing wiki pages. --Webkilla (talk) 19:32, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
Usernames are not unique to the wiki on which they are created. Your spammers/vandals could be creating their usernames on other wikis. Although it's possible to put some kind of statement in the site notice (the banner at the top of every page), it's unlikely that staff would put a site notice about your wiki on every wiki. --Saftzie (talk) 20:27, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Ah ok - I thought that page was unique to the wiki. --Webkilla (talk) 20:54, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
