== Problem ==<br />
<br />
Lcawte DISPLAYTITLE doesn't seem to work on my wiki. --[[User:N64dude|N64dude]] ([[User talk:N64dude|talk]]) 00:45, 10 August 2013 (UTC)<br />
<br />
:What do you mean? What happens when you try to use that magic word? What do you think that should happen?<br />
<br />
:DISPLAYTITLE is [[mw:Manual:$wgRestrictDisplayTitle|restricted]] by default &mdash; that is, custom titles must normalize to the same page title. So if you have a page about the cell phone manufactured by Apple, you could use <code><nowiki>{{DISPLAYTITLE:iPhone}}</nowiki></code> on that page to render its title "correctly", because for MediaWiki (and especially in its default configuration), "iPhone" and "IPhone" are the same title. But you can't change the title of the iPhone page to "Apple iPhone" with DISPLAYTITLE, because whereas "iPhone" and "IPhone" normalize to the same title, "Apple iPhone" doesn't.<br />
<br />
:Some wikis have a template, usually named <code>Template:Title</code>, which requires additional JavaScript code to work. This template allows to change the title of a page to any arbitrary name, but honestly, that's a pretty scary ability, as it tends to confuse people. With DISPLAYTITLE and its default restrictions, it should be relatively obvious what the page's real name is and thus you'll know how to link to it. But what about if the page is called "IPhone" but its title is displayed as "The best cell phone ever"? Yep, many users would try linking to <code><nowiki>[[The best cell phone ever]]</nowiki></code> and then wonder why it isn't working...<br />
<br />
:In any case, if you need either the DISPLAYTITLE restrictions lifted and/or help with implementing <code><nowiki>Template:Title</nowiki></code> for your wiki, [[User talk:Jack Phoenix|let me know]]. --[[User:Jack Phoenix|Jack Phoenix]] <staff/> ([[User talk:Jack Phoenix|contact]]) 12:49, 10 August 2013 (UTC)<br />

Can you help to implement it on my wiki please. --[[User:N64dude|N64dude]] ([[User talk:N64dude|talk]]) 17:07, 10 August 2013 (UTC)<br />
<br />
:By your wiki do you mean [[s:w:en.userwiki]]? I'm asking to make sure that I have the correct wiki; many ShoutWiki editors are active on multiple wikis and there are several prominent users who have started multiple wikis on ShoutWiki, too, and in such cases, it's not obvious what wiki or wikis they mean. ;-) --[[User:Jack Phoenix|Jack Phoenix]] <staff/> ([[User talk:Jack Phoenix|contact]]) 20:39, 12 August 2013 (UTC)<br />

<br />
Hi Lewis,<br/>I would like to ask you about an old Bugzilla request for upgrading Semantic MediaWiki. I know you've been quite busy recently, yet I think it should be great to update the SMW version up to 2.0 (last one). The actual ShoutWiki SMW version (1.8.0.1) has some issues, especially counting some property pages on statistics and I saw issues on Concept pages. <br />
:: Thank you very much. As tested in a personal home wiki, it seems that unlike the previous versions, the 2.0 installation is specific for each wiki. You'll have to use [[mw:Composer|Composer]] separately for each Semantic wiki. Installation seems quite, simple, may be the upgrade is a little bit more complicated. ::: Hi Lewis, just a reminder as there are some updating issues with this version of SMW; properties appear then disappear with no apparent reason. The content that it has put till now, for vandaliar is " Very nice site " or something like that, then, I ask for help him with this, because this one Problem, already multiplying this one (I want décir, that the vandalism repeating itself) and I ask for a checkup him to the IP'S that exist vandalizado, to see if my suspicions are true (my suspicions they are that it treats itself of same it presents, only that programming in the computer multiple IP'S) or that treats itself about another person. In this case, I ask for a solution him, I suggest him: 1-In the case of which my suspicions are accepted, so, would be necessary to go blocking the IP'S while they continue appearing, because in another wiki, I pass that a blocked IP, he said to me that IP and I was programming I suppose that he programmes them with his computer, there must be programs like that. Also I ask you, that pìense another solution, if the mia does not prove (I it created that if, that there will be another solution). 2-En the case of which they are different persons, also I ask you to think a solution and I think the same one that in the first case.Thanks in advance--[[User:Libros|Libros]] ([[User talk:Libros|talk]]) 17:40, 8 May 2014 (UTC)<br />

returns a non-ISO time for blockexpiry, "20160818213400" instead of "2016-08-18T21:34:00Z". I haven't checked an exhaustive list (or other blocks), but the other timestamp in the same API (blockedtimestamp) returns an ISO time. <br />
: <s>We actively spam ourselves to see how alive our community is.</s> I'm not actually sure, but I'm going to have a guess and hope I remember to file a Phabricator task about it when I get back from work. It may be that the anonymous spammer is using HTTPS, which is the only reason I can think of for it to go through Chirp. We've had some email spam from Vertex before, although this was through one of the forms so I guess it needs a little more validation as the address was probably just random@vertexsIPgoeshere. With this case, it would make sense if the IP header isn't getting forwarded somewhere in the horrible chain of servers for HTTPS requests<br />
:: User (DNS, etc) -> Vertex (HTTPS forwarding) -> Chirp (SSL Termination) -> Vertex (Varnish) -> Monolith (Backend) -> Grunt (Database) -> User (Browser)<br />
: It was initially set up as a test, and has been a sort of hidden feature for most wikis for a while. Once we sort out how we deal with the remaining issue (sub.sub.domains.com), I'll probably move it to Vertex as it makes more sense. == Question concerning Module:Lua ==<br />
I had a question about Module:Lua, which is in-use on the main Wikipedia database. I understand this module — mostly used in the cases of infobox templates — was, at least for a short interim period, used here at ShoutWiki. However, I am also aware it was disabled, due to the ShoutWIki servers being unable to handle what the module called for. While I am sure there are no immediate plans to re-install the module, I did read that [some] ShoutWiki databases could have it installed. I was wondering: is there a downside to this happening? Like, does it crash the selected Wiki, due to [potential] instability? and, also, is there any potential of it coming back full-time to the ShoutWiki database? Thank you for your time! [[User:MusicNation|MusicNation]] ([[User talk:MusicNation|talk]]) 16:54, 4 December 2017 (UTC)<br />
: ShoutWiki uses Scribunto to implement Lua. If you don't have it on your wiki, you can ask for it. --[[User:Saftzie|Saftzie]] ([[User talk:Saftzie|talk]]) 21:19, 4 December 2017 (UTC)<br />

::: It's very stable and quite common. It's also what Wikipedia uses. There's a good chance it's already on your wiki, but if it's not, you can have it added. --[[User:Saftzie|Saftzie]] ([[User talk:Saftzie|talk]]) 07:00, 5 December 2017 (UTC)<br />

::::: Scribunto is a globally enabled extension on ShoutWiki. If your modules aren't working these days, it's probably an issue with the Lua code itself. --[[User:Lcawte|Lewis Cawte]] ([[User talk:Lcawte|talk]]) <staff /> 04:39, 6 December 2017 (UTC)<br />

== Spam accounts started daily on my wiki ==<br />
Thanks for your work. I don't know if this is where I should discuss this. I am getting spam accounts started daily. I delete them every day or every other day, and block the user names for a month. That seems to be long enough to prevent reuse. <br />
<br />
Is there any way to filter this? I don't want to block good users. I get a rare few who register so that they have the possibility to edit the 2019 page via a specially created user right just to edit the 2019 page: <br />
*http://cannabis.shoutwiki.com/wiki/2019 <br />
<br />
Maybe the addition of links to user pages could be blocked until the user meets a minimum number of non-deleted edits? <br />
<br />
Or maybe user page creation could be blocked altogether until a minimum amount of time passes. A couple weeks maybe. <br />
<br />
User registration could occur right away, but not user page creation for awhile. And then no links until another couple weeks passes. <br />
<br />
Maybe this could be suggested to Mediawiki developers. <br />
<br />
The multi-step process could be built into Mediawiki. So no work would be required of admins on wikis. It would be automatic. It would be much rarer to see spam links since spammers would have to go through a multi-stage process for a single spam link. <br />
<br />
The time period could be set to vary automatically. Or an option to choose the time period could be given to wiki admins. This would help thwart any auto-timing software attempted by spammers. --[[User:Timeshifter|'''Timeshifter''']] ([[User talk:Timeshifter|talk]]) 07:30, 17 February 2019 (UTC)<br />
: Rather than core MediaWiki, it would be better to put such functionality in an extension. Hi, Lewis! I'm Dove. I have noticed that your user page has been vandalized many times by disruptive I.P. addresses. == Getting more editors? ==<br />
<br />
Hi Mr. Cawte, I was just wondering if there was a way to get more editors for your ShoutWiki site? I'm an admin on a forked Wikia and I want to stay way ahead of the spoon (especially since someone there pissed me off recently). Thanks! --'''<font color="red">[[User:Rock-O-Jello|Listen to the beat of the soul]]</font> ☆ <font color="purple">[[User talk:Rock-O-Jello|Talk to me~!]]</font>''' 22:56, 24 April 2019 (UTC)<br />
<br />
: Hey! So there's some generic starter advice I'd give to most wikis and no single piece of advice below is guaranteed, or a single way to achieve your goals, but, use them with consideration and integrate them as a broader strategy, and you're far more likely to get better results.<br />
: I will note, however, it is far harder to make forks work. Forks by one person are probably the hardest to get going again. They work best when there's a group of editors. Having that community, however small, can make life a lot easier, especially as you're not fighting against your rival. Forks also have huge issues with identity and SEO which can hinder your efforts (and there really isn't a huge amount that can be done to fix this in any small timeframe)<br />
:* Get your wiki on social media - I created a wiki for the NBC show State of Affairs, and while the accounts didn't necessarily drive more editors, there was a trackable increase in visitors (staff perks) - the Twitter account to this day remains followed by some of the main actors in the cast, and was retweeted by them on various occasions. Admittedly, being in the UK following a US show did result in me pulling some rather painful early starts/late finishes being up until the very early hours of the morning to try and get as much interaction as possible.<br />
:* Engage new people - a wiki is nothing without editors. The HAWelcome tool will automatically welcome new editors to your wiki. If you use that, or even if you don't, make sure anyone new to your site has a friendly, relevant first experience that encourages them to come back and help again. You should assume good faith. Unless you are a Wikipedia clone, most new editors won't necessarily instantly understand or know about a manual of style, your wikis individual templates, etc. You may have to spend a bit of time cleaning up the good in their initial edits, and then slowly introduce them to complexities like a MoS and templates (though I would certainly include a link to the relevant documentation somewhere in that conversation in case they want to "skip ahead".)<br />
:* Work out who your potential editors are, and where to find them - this is something that is wiki-specific. Game communities you might find on a forum, entertainment communities perhaps on social media, etc. I don't know every corner of the internet or every topic, but, people that run wikis should know where their audience is. Once you've worked that out, be there. I'd advise you to be smart about how you advertise the site. If you find discussions about your wiki topic, for example, if someone notices a small detail in a forum discussion about a TV episode covered by the wiki that I haven't spotted, I'd reply with something like "Oh cool, I hadn't noticed that, I've just added it to the page on the (topic wiki)" and inline link somewhere that. In addition, I'd have a link in my signature if allowed, normally just with "admin at wiki", or just the wiki name. This would normally keep within the rules, and, you're not spamming. If you find someone that is constantly spotting things, you might approach them more directly and see if they'd be interested in helping out. Other platforms you might have to take a different approach, but, the general theme is don't spam, advertise in an appropriate and measured way.<br />
:* Bureaucracy kills small sites - play it cool with your first editors. There's a lot of things that appear on bigger wikis that impede the operations of small wikis. If you've got a lot of vandalism and you've only got a small team, be more liberal with your admin tools. I'm not saying give everyone that joins sysop after their first edit, but, you don't need a RfA process if you've got a team of 4 editors... this is just one example of some wiki bureaucracy that pushes people away. Give people the right tools to do their jobs and let them get on with it. This leads to my next point...<br />
:* It isn't your wiki - Just because you've founded a site, it doesn't mean you have all the control. Wikis are community projects, work as a community. Have discussions between your editors, have votes where necessary. You're not an army of clones, make people feel included in decision making, be bold, but don't push people around. It's a fine balance, but, it is important to get right. Your ideal end point in building a community is one where you could step away and the community could carry on like nothing happened. Don't take that as an invitation to do nothing or be a nobody, but, your team should have the skills/knowledge/drive to continue without you (even if they do notice you're missing!)<br />
:* Make your site unique - customize it a bit. You don't necessarily have to go overboard and write a custom theme for your wiki, but, make sure your wiki tone is different. Create a logo and favicon for your site. This gives your site identity, it means it isn't just a bulk standard generic wiki. If you need styling/design help, the [[Forum:Community help|community help forum]] is a good place to start. <br />
<br />
: This isn't necessarily an exhaustive list, just a few tips that I've heard and/or used over far too many years being involved in a fair few wiki communities and web projects - both successful and unsuccessful. --[[User:Lcawte|Lewis Cawte]] ([[User talk:Lcawte|talk]]) <staff /> 13:07, 25 April 2019 (UTC)<br />

Since you don’t have the [[mw:Extension:CentralAuth|CentralAuth]] extension, how can you manage user accounts (locks, oversight, merges and un-merges?) —[[User:Znotch190713|<font color="green">'''<b>Znotch190713</b>'''</font>]] ([[User talk:Znotch190713|Talk]] [[Special:Contributions/Znotch190713|Contributions]]) 07:35, 16 July 2019 (UTC)<br />
<br />
: We've always had a global user table, we don't need to do merges and unmerges and the Oversight extension was merged into MediaWiki core. Staff currently hold those rights and can use them where nessesary. We've got a number of tools to block global accounts, but, that's not something anyone other than the [[Special:ListUsers/staff|people]] with access to them need to worry about. As to why we don't use CentralAuth, it was an architectural decision taken by ShoutWiki's founders due to the way it requires you to setup up MediaWiki. ** If I were you, I wouldn't do that. You encourage yourself to cheat so you can have 5 extra wikis. I think it's one of the reasons for banning on ShoutWiki. And believe my experience, you won't have enough time to expand correctly the whole 5+ wikis. Life will keep you away from your wikis for many (good) reasons and to gather a community to make them grow is difficult if not impossible. --[[User:LIMAFOX76|LIMAFOX76]] ([[User talk:LIMAFOX76|talk]]) 06:24, 23 September 2019 (UTC)<br />
*** Yes, correct, it is a bannable offence. If you're not going to manage the wikis you've created, email support{{@}}shoutwiki.com and we'll delete them for you. --[[User:Lcawte|Lewis Cawte]] ([[User talk:Lcawte|talk]]) <staff /> 07:22, 23 September 2019 (UTC)<br />

** It won't take us particularly long to put it in, but, we'll only do so when someone has a proven need for it. --[[User:Lcawte|Lewis Cawte]] ([[User talk:Lcawte|talk]]) <staff /> 08:16, 24 September 2019 (UTC)<br />
